Why Sheffield Trades Miss £1,900 a Month in Leads

11 June 2026

Most Sheffield tradespeople don’t know how much work is slipping past them. Not because they’re bad at their trade — but because their website isn’t catching enquiries when they’re too busy to answer the phone.

Run the numbers. A typical Sheffield plumber or electrician fields around 16 enquiries a month. Average job value: £400. If even 30% of those calls go unanswered, hit a generic contact form, or land on a slow site that loses them before they fill anything out — that’s £1,920 a month in revenue that never materialises.

Over a year, that’s nearly £23,000.

Where the leads go

1. Missed calls during jobs. You’re under a sink at 10am, the phone rings, it goes to voicemail, and the customer calls the next guy on the list. This one is fixable — a fast-response lead capture page with a clear WhatsApp link can catch enquiries even when you can’t pick up.

2. Generic contact forms with no urgency. Most trade websites have a form that says “get in touch.” The customer has an urgent job. “Get in touch” feels slow. They leave.

3. Shared lead directories. Checkatrade, Rated People, MyBuilder — they charge per lead, and they give the same lead to 4 other Sheffield tradespeople at the same time. The fastest callback wins. You’re not always fastest when you’re on a job.

4. No emergency or out-of-hours path. A blocked drain at 9pm is worth £250–£400 to whoever answers it. If your site has no out-of-hours prompt, that enquiry goes to the trade with the 24hr badge.

What a better enquiry system actually looks like

The goal isn’t a fancier website. It’s a site built around how your trade actually gets work.

For reactive trades — plumbers, electricians, drainage — the priority is speed to response. The site should have a phone number visible in the header, a WhatsApp tap-to-message, and a short form that fires a text alert to your phone the second someone fills it in.

For quoted-project trades — kitchens, extensions, solar — the priority is qualification. The site should walk the customer through their project before you ever pick up the phone, so the first conversation is already warm.

Neither of these is complicated. But they have to be built around the right flow for your specific trade, not copied from a template designed for every industry at once.

Work out your own number

Here’s the calculation: take your average job value, multiply by your estimated monthly enquiries, then multiply by 0.3 (a conservative missed-lead rate). That’s your revenue leak.

For a Sheffield electrician at £350/job, 12 enquiries/month: £1,260/month, or £15,120/year slipping through.

If that number is uncomfortable, that’s the point. The question isn’t whether your current setup is losing money — most setups are — the question is how much you’re willing to let it keep costing.
